. Notes.. WarSongs is a collection written mostly over the last few months for my SongaWeek.com website. As the war in Iraq grinds on, and the body count grows ever higher, as a mostly topical songwriter it's been hard for me to write about much else. I have opposed this war from the outset....and still supported our troops fighting it. Anyone who thinks these two things are incompatible is a colossal dimwit. If you equate dissent with disloyalty, best to take a class in the constitution at your local community college. Pay attention too. You're pretty far gone already. The latest administration reason for the war....after the first few blew up in their collective faces of course.....is to spread "democracy" and rid Iraq of Saddam, a despicable despot. Last I checked Saddam was still a despicable despot when we were giving him guns and money back in the 70s and 80s. And when he gassed his own people? The silence of the US government was deafening. Hypocrisy anyone? Spreading democracy? There's a genocide happening right now in Sudan. How democratic is that? Our fighting men and women have always done their duty. A pile of sadistic goobers at Abu Ghraib doesn't change that....nor does an official detainee policy that makes the heart of Amnesty International skip a beat. Our military is called and they serve....which is a helluva lot more than we can say about the folks who have placed them in harms way. These songs are for those who serve with honor. May you come home safe. If the songs seem especially......downbeat maybe.....it's simply because I find nothing upbeat about war. Like my previous release, Love in the Present Tense, this collection is only available via download because while people still listen to CDs, nobody actually buys them anymore. Slàinte.......... - Tom Flannery
