One in Four

One in four homeless persons in America is a Veteran. 1 in 4.
How's that for "supporting the troops"?

It's not enough to say I'm scared
well...the words are bound to fail
they got us walking 'round in circles
they got us chasing our own tails
well...the mind can run with glee
thinking on what they might do to me
and they tell me that I'm setting these people free
I'm scared I'm scared I'm scared
I'm scared I'm scared I'm scared

Her name is Lucy and she's 17
my ring hangs above her chest
while she cheers for the home team
I wear a kevlar vest
now who's sneaking up behind her
maybe someone she'd prefer
but she wants things as they were
before I was scared scared scared
before I was scared scared scared

I'm too scared to move a muscle
too scared to sit still
I'm scared of all the locals
I'll be scared until....
I can reach for my mother
once again in real time
and not just when I'm dreaming
where I'm crying all the time

Of course I can't act on it
I wasn't raised to show that side
rather die 1000 deaths
than to run on off and hide
we're superbly trained and superbly led
but in the back of my head
is a coward who lurks instead
I'm scared I'm scared I'm scared
I'm scared I'm scared I'm scared

I'm scared of the desert
and the bustle of the town
enemies in plain sight
trying to beat me down
I'm scared of the traffic
and the garbage along the road
scared of his tactics
scared to explode

It's not enough to say I'm scared
the words they fail this time
you confront your fear your way
and I'll try to handle mine
I'm yours for the taking
my head it won't stop aching
and my hands they won't stop shaking
I'm scared I'm scared I'm scared
I'm scared I'm scared I'm scared
